Jenni Scott is posting her insider’s-eye-view of the event in daily instalments.

Friday and preparations: ‘In fact that was impressively quickly done, leaving time to get to the Covered Market to see if I could spot our CAPTION cake (nope, it was already all boxed up) and to get a bite of food to take home where the fair tortipede awaited me.’

Happy Birthday!

Saturday morning: ‘I’d had a vague back-of-the-head idea that I might go by bike but, strangely, I was more sensible than that in the end and went by bus, aiming to go back by same. That is, I was aiming for that until I actually saw the bloomin’ cake; I hadn't really twigged that yes, it was gonna be 1 ft by 2 ft in size and heavy to boot, especially encased in a sturdy box with a good thick base too.’

Saturday afternoon and evening: ‘We had a data projector sorted out and some rudimentary items for endarkening the talks room (which is normally more of a workshop / arty room and hence supplied with copious amounts of natural light…).’

Sunday: ‘For some reason Mark had given Sarah some fruit – a mango, kiwi, and coconut – so I had fun opening up the coconut with me trusty hammer, with both of us having first struggled with poking a hole in the top to let out the milk.’
